I'm not sure if I asked this already but I vaguely remember someone telling me that circulation coins and PL coins are the same composition.

But I want to know if PL coins are lacquered or coated in some sort of non-metal material.

The reason I ask is because:
1) When you touch these coins, the fingerprints never etch into these coins and tone. The prints can actually be wiped off easily long after being on the surface.

2) I tried electroplating the surface of these coins for fun. While regular circulation coins electroplated just fine, I could never get my PL coins electroplated. There seems to be something on the surface of the coin that is protecting the metal and prevents it from being electroplated.

Yes - the $1 and $2 coins in the birthday, wedding, birth year sets, etc. are lacquered. I can't speak for the general uncirculated sets - I have not touched one since 2011...

For reference...Im referring to pre-2011 PL coins.

Specifically I tried electroplated the 2001 coins. All PL coins, regardless of denomination, would just not electroplate from 2001.

Use acetone to remove any coating, then try electroplating.
Let us know the results.

P.S. Have you tried to electroplate any post 2001 circulation coins?
