I have an unopened mint bag containing $40 of 1963 pennies given to my father as payment for a bet that he won many years ago.
Can anyone give me a heads up as to what varieties I should be looking for if I open the bag and search through the coins?
Thanks for your help. Edited by 4mile123 12/04/2016 1:40 pm

you could always look for some hanging 3's (single, double and triple hanging). Those would just be die clashes showing the queen's chin/neck hanging from the left leaf to the 3 in 1963. There's also a bunch of other things that people have noticed. Scroll down on this page and take a look. Please post if you find anything interesting :) http://coinsandcanada.com/coins-pri...nt-1953-1964

Look for straight and curved clipped planchets. Lamination errors are fun to find as well. Is there not an extra branch or twig for this year? Double dies are something to look for. Have fun with it and please let us know what you find.

Sometimes there are little blobs along the twigs and less frequently on the leaves. They look like caterpillars & that is what I call 'em.

Having started I realize how long this is going to take. So far I have found a number of hanging 3's mostly single, a couple doubles. Also came across this, a lamination error or planchet flaw? It's hard to see but there are also three raised bumps between the top of the N and the bottom of the 3

Could it be a bag from a bank? 1c bags direct from the Royal Canadian Mint contained $60 face value. Before 1964, they would contain three inner bags of $20 each (after 1964, the entire contents were just doubled bagged).

It could be a bag from a bank, SPP, I just assumed it was from the mint. The pennies are in a plain white canvas bag which was sealed with a lead seal. The only markings on the bag are the numbers 410 63 4 stencilled on the bag with black ink. What is amazing to me is that the coins are all still brilliant red. I assumed that over the many years they would have tarnished but there are only the odd ones with any sort of toning of tarnish.
