What are your thoughts on the grading service "Coin Mart"? Sellers who have coins slabbed by them are fairly reasonably priced. I have considered buying but to take them out of the slab.

Looking at this:

I am not an expert in grading, but I have met the gentleman who owns this business, and seems to be honest, and easy to deal with. from the pictured 50 cent piece if it is not an MS-62, I would say it would be higher grade, versus a lower one.

Coin Mart isn't a TPG (Third party grader), they are a FPG (first party), i.e. they are grading for their own sales.

That's how it used to be. You looked at the coin and gave a grade, the dealer looked at the coin and gave a grade and a price. If you agreed you had a deal. If you didn't, you passed.

This type of holder - heat sealed flip - was actually one of the first North American holdering services (David Hall).

It's no different from buying from any seller that grades their own wares. Nothing inherently wrong with that.

I stopped looking at their listings a while ago because I felt they were over-priced. They do offer a "make-an-offer" option on most of their listings and will come down a bit. Their grading is fairly accurate IMO.

Here is a recent thread referring to them cross-grading ICCS coins:

This is where the expression "buy the coin, not the slab" becomes particularly important.
I don't know whether Coin Mart has any significant history.
