Very cool to see this in its original case...sorta like the Antiques Roadshow
What's the date on this? If I'd guess, I'd say around 1870-1880.

Wow...was I off! Course, the eagle design had me wondering whether it was earlier, but I could not place that in the Civil War...it was earlier than that!

G'day, they really are beautiful art.
What diameter are they, please ?

The central figure reminds me a lot of Britannia, by the water's edge; ship coming in; cornucopia; and heraldic shield.
Interesting features seem to be:
Phrygian cap on staff;
eagle;
spinning wheel, and I think a shuttle & bobbin;
wreath; and
caduceus, without Hermes.

It would be wonderful to understand the reason behind the selection of these elements: some classic; some 18th Century; and some very modern in 1857.

A welcome addition to any collection.

Both medals are 51mm dia.
The obverse of this medal features the goddess Columbia with her cap and her hand extended offering the winner a laurel wreath. Other images of science and progress surround her.Engraver Robert Lovett learned his skills from his father, George Lovett.
Link to one of his more famous works.

G'day & thankyou for that link.
Good-looking coin; great story.
Wish I knew who the successful bidder was: US$48,300 for a re-strike, in copper ?
He could pick anything he likes out of my collection for that.

But back to Mr Lovett's predicament: it was something similar that got me "into" Napoleonic coins. With all of the vicissitudes, of that era, the Paris mint workers ALWAYS had their finger on the pulse, and produced coins with the correct effigy.

thanks again,
