Evening all!
I went to my local coin store today to spend some money given to me as a Christmas gift and found that there was a box of 1700-1830 Fanams for about 35 dollars each. I noticed several different designs (despite only buying one) and decided to do some research on them.
The vast majority were more or less the same, versions of what I am fairly confident are Cochin Dutch India designs. Mine, seen here, is pretty typical.

The rest of them appear to be South Indian variations of the same design. I'm no expert on them, but decided to do some more research. Here is the type which is most different from the others:

Could anyone tell me what this is? Thanks for any help you can give!

I am unable to pick forgeries of these in good gold, but I DO know that they are around.

I am also of the opinion that lots of them were originally made, to provide a store of wealth.

I guess that both categories could be used as a store of wealth in modern India. India is the biggest consumer of jewelry gold.
Rest in Peace

There are tons of these that are imitations of, rather than forgeries of, earlier issues.

Most really are gold.

Check ebay with over 400 recently closed, most selling in the $7-$20 range. You may be able to find an exact match there.

Back in the early 2000's I would purchase error coins from India in 1000 coins lots.. After a few purchases, the seller offered me some Gold Fanams from the 1700's at around $4.00 each, that I would resell here in the U.S. for between 6 to 8 Dollars each..

At the time, my daughter worked with me selling Jewelry & Gem Stones by Carat Weight..

Below is what I had left when I stopped selling in 2006. and each gold fanam tested at 14Kt gold on my Electronic Gold Tester..

The Lincoln Cent is pictured to show exactly how small these are.

Thanks for your help everyone!
I thought some of them might be fakes, but I did buy it from a long-established dealer. Good to know it's probably real gold, and half the fun is all the weird designs after all.
