Purchased a 1906 Indian penny on ebay and instead received a 1907 Indian penny of lesser quality. Under magnification I find a fine line scored all around the Indian head. I am curious and would like to know more about how or why on earth this would ever be done to deface a coin. Thanks.

Difficult to see what you're seeing. If you could add better pics that would help. Thanks

with the need for better photos. If there is a fine line next to the design elements of a coin it indicates someone used a tool to make those lines so that those elements appear stronger. This is called tooling, and it greatly reduces the value of the coin.

Sorry guys. I tried to take a better photo with no luck. I don't want to remove the coin from the 2X2 until I hear back from the seller, to leave it as-is. If he answers keep the coin, I'll remove it and get a better photo attached. It's a very fine micron line. Must be some type of tool that does that. I'll post back if I can get a better shot of it.

Have you experimented with the photo uploading steps in the tutorial section at the top of the page? to the CCF!

Could you possibly be seeing MD i.e. Machine Doubling and calling it scoring? The photo does seem to show some doubling of the profile. The writing on the 2x2 shows "ing" what does the whole word say? Maybe doubling? Couls also say tooling as someone else suggested...

I think I've figured out a better way to do photos. I tried downloading the Irfanview, but download was "blocked by an extension". Please see these photos, I think they do show it better.
