As part of its ongoing activities to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City, the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM) is pleased to announce the commissioning of a commemorative 2-dollar circulation coin. Designed by Quebec jeweler Genevieve Bertrand, the coin will be officially unveiled this May at a ceremony in Quebec City. A total of six million of these commemorative coins, dated 2008, will be struck.

"The Royal Canadian Mint prides itself on celebrating the richness of Canada's historical, cultural and natural heritage on all its coins, therefore it is very fitting that such an important event in our country's history be featured on a coin which will be exchanged and collected by people in the Province of Quebec, as well as in the rest of Canada," said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the RCM. "The City of Quebec, internationally
400th anniversary of Quebec City. famous for its historical significance and old European charm, is a tremendous source of pride for Canadians and we are delighted to be participating in its anniversary celebrations."

"The Royal Canadian Mint has created a beautiful commemorative coin which symbolizes the foundation of Quebec City, an important beginning in Quebec and Canadian history," said Alban D'Amours, President and CEO of the Desjardins Group. "As a major sponsor of Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations, I am proud that the Desjardins Group is supporting a commemorative coin launch which is meaningful to our collective history."

Once released in circulation in May, the new 400th Anniversary of Quebec
City coin will be exclusively distributed across Quebec through Desjardins
Group. This commemorative coin will also be distributed through Desjardins
Group across Ontario, and les caisses populaires acadiennes of New Brunswick and Canadians will also be encouraged to look for this coin in their change.

That's an interesting bit of news, thanks! I suppose we won't know the design until it's unveiled in May?

Hummm, sounds like a nice coin to get. I have been collecting the odd $2 here and there when I can. If anyone in Canada, would like to grab me one when they come out I would be more than pleased to send them a couple of our Aussie dollars for 2008 as a trade.

I am wondering if this special twoonie will be also issued in another 2008 PL set like the 1999 Nunavut twoonie was.

I've been looking all over and can't find anything about a release date. Where did you get your initial info? I only see the silver $1 coins..

Thanks! The Royal Mint's website has nothing on the Twoonie, only on the Samuel de Champlain NCLT dollar coin. (Which is pictured at the bottom of the page.) The article states that they will be issued for circulation in May, so I'll just hit up my local bank for a couple rolls of "trade bait" then. Thanks for the linky.

Thanks Topher for your kind offer.

Our 2008 Mob of Kangaroos $1 is just starting to circulate. There will also the Scouting Australia Centenary $1 released for circulation in late April.

We have several other non-circulating $1s released this year too - International Year of Planet Earth, Centenary of Rugby League, Australian Coat of Arms Centenary with C mintmark, S privy mark and counterstamp, B privy mark and counterstamp and later in the year M privy mark and counterstamp, plus the Chinese Year of the Rat and in the Baby Mint Sets the Magic Pudding - Norman Lindsay $1.

I'm sure the RAM will have something for the Olympics too but nothing released about that yet.

I'm happy to help you out with any of the coins.

Wayne
