Hey all-

Has anyone here tried roll hunting pennies, nickels, dimes or quarters from rolls that did not come from the bank?

I'm thinking about picking up some quarters after work. The banks all close at 4 around here...

Let me know your thoughts

Not a good idea. Most stores know how much change they need for a day or week. You may talk them out of a roll or two, but fifty or a hundred, forget it.

I think the only way you could do this would be to exchange rolls of coin for rolls of coin. You'd get some funny looks and probably have to convince the teller that your roll had the right amount in it.

I have and its a pretty good idea. Dont do it too often especially on a larger scale. I found them to have higher wheatie concentration than most bank rolls. Good Luck -PP

Took a chance while I was picking up some milk last night and went to the customer service counter.

They had exactly
4 rolls of quarters
8 rolls of dimes
1 roll of nickels
3 rolls of pennies
no halves

I took the quarters and pennies

Findings: (not much)
Quarters - a 1963 silver, 1999 Delaware in very good, and a 2008 Oklahoma I needed
Pennies - 2 wheats - a 1946 and a 1950 both very circulated and a 1970D thats is very close to BU

I had visions of entires rolls of BU silver quarters.. didn't exactly work out that way haha

Don't the grocery stores get their rolls from the same bank or community as you?.....

Banks in my area refuse to sell rolls to non-customers.
I have turned to my local supermarket and recently local grocery stores.

Today I went and tried a different grocery store in the area and got two rolls of nickels and cents each. Got home and found two dimes in one of the rolls of pennies. Which was also 'filled' to the edge of the roll. I don't think they counted them out before rolling them.
Came out to be 9c extra in each of the penny rolls.

Another grocery store the other day I got two rolls each of nickles and pennies.
One of these 'penny rolls' was filled with the ugliest cents I have ever seen. YUK

You found a silver quarter in just 4 rolls? Awesome! I go to convenience stores and ask for rolls. Some people, believe it or not, bring in rolls of silver dollars just to buy more alchohol.

Chaosmaster - I have a funny story about that. When I was in college I worked at a liqor store (one of those big wharehouse type places) and everyday at 1230 this one guy would walk in from across the street and buy a single can of Bud Light and a nipper of Southern Comfort.

He ALWAYS paid in half dollars.

If only I had known then what I know now...

I'm going to hit up a package store tonight after work.. maybe I'll get lucky

I really can't believe there will be anything "special" in a roll from a grocery store or convenience store. All the coins are ultimately coming from the same source.

But ya gotta keep trying!!
