I accidentally forgot to pull a tube of 8 one ounce gold maple leafs out of the drier. They flew out of the tube and are chewed up pretty good. I wonder how much this will hurt the value?
Gold's gold, right? Edited by TMCD75 01/01/2017 10:39 pm

Nope gold is not gold. Damaged Maples get about 96 to 97 per cent of spot from a major legitimate bullion dealer . They have to be remelted or if lucky sold to a jeweller who needs pure 24 K . Good luck. Also .999 Maples get less than .9999 maples.

I think I'll try to sell them on ebay when gold goes back up. I figure I could at least sell them for spot price, which would give someone a good deal because they won't pay a 45 dollar premium.

How could they make it to the drier? I would think a half pound of gold in your pocket would be pretty hard to miss.

Here's the story...when we go out of town, I put some of my coins into the drier to hide. We traveled to Louisville to visit my mother in law. I hid the coins in a typical coin type box, the long skinny holder types. I had other coins in there as well as these eight gold maple leafs that were also in their Canadian Mint issued tube. We got home from our trip and I totally blanked on the coins being in there when I did a load if laundry. I heard a thumping noise and to my horror, it was the coin box, still in tact, flopping around in the drier.
Long story short, they came out of the tube but stayed in the box. They're scratched up, I'm not happy and I'm not sure what to do. I like my coins BU, even bullion, what should I do?

You know that it's 24K gold. So if you were to USE the gold (not sell it) then the purity is at 24K, and perfectly fine. I would offer you the same that I would pay for 24K. Grains or bars or damaged coins, it is all gold. A person buying from you might nitpick about it, but we're not talking about a damaged car or machine, it's just a pure element, a metal, that will work the same if you put it to use. Scratching the surface of a metal doesn't change its molecular structure.

Quote: I like my coins BU, even bullion, what should I do? Uhhhmmm ... purchase a strong home safe or rent a safety deposit box for the next trip .... much better than the dryer! Not much you can do about the damaged ones at this point ... perhaps sell them at a loss and replace them at a premium if they bother you that much. David

Put them on ebay sure , then pay 9 per cent plus Pay Pal ..............excellent Math! Way better to get your 96 to 97 % from a reputable bullion dealer.

If you ever dry a full monster box, I volunteer to remove the lint build up from your dryer. More seriously, if the money is not needed in the near future, I would simply lock them up for a decade or two and revisit the issue then! Maybe one of them could become your pocket piece

I really appreciate the explanation. I was envisioning your pocket dragging on the floor like an injured tail.
I'd sell them for bullion or see if you can trade them, with some cash, for 8 new ones.

Wonder how much a private mint/foundry would charge to mint one big 8oz gold coin ?

Can I see a pic on how bad the damage is? Definitely not ebay. 10% seller fees + shipping + paypal fees and so on.

If I were going to use an appliance to hide my coins....I would use a dishwasher. At least I would have to empty it before I used it and find my treasure box in case I forgot.

I would have a hard time hiding my coins anywhere in my house. I would probably need an underground bunker the kind they would use for a nuclear disaster .
