I have someone trying to sell me these as "prototype" PSCS slabs. I've been doing some digging and can't find any reference to anything like it.
So I'm wondering, are they really prototypes or is he full of it?

I've certainly never seen or heard of anything like these from PCGS. There are those here who know the full history of slab type progressions and dates of issue, and perhaps one will chime in.

But I would lean heavily towards these not being PCGS.

I believe these are technically not PCGS but they are kind of a precursor to PCGS I have found them discussed on other coin sites but apparently the link was Not allowed here.
Tried once more with a link.

That was how David Hall packaged hic coins at David Hall Rare Coins in the years before he founded PCGS. The do bear some similarities in the label to those of the first generation PCGS slabs. Some people therefore consider them to be a "prototype" slab. They make a nice tie in but they are really two different companies.

Thanks for the help guys. The seller is wanting $80 ea which I thought was a little steep, especially for something I couldn't find any history on. I think I'll pass on them unless he drops his price.

I know ANACS actually did utilize soft plastic flip type "slabs" in its extremely early days.

Xavier - they returned coins that were photographed for the photocerts in soft flips along with the cert. However their packaging clearly indicated those flips were not for long term storage. That many of them have come down through 40 years w/o turning into piles of green slime gives some idea how rare PVC damage can be.
