Hello everyone

Got a coin here that has me fully stumped! I have posted some nice pictures the coin is really pretty in hand. This came from a WWII era soldiers keep sake's I am positive it is 100% genuine.

These coins some from several mints and have several date/die variants. The coin appears at first blush to be a 1944 (b) 2 Annas small date KM 541a a rather common date/type. Yet these coins should have 4 small lines in the quarter-foils on the date side, they are missing on this coin. The only one of this type that my reference material that these lines are missing on is the 1944 C (Calcutta mint) Large Date!! This appears to be some sort of mule or maybe a pattern? Has anyone ever seen or heard of this coin?

Your coin comes from the Calcutta mint. 2 Annas struck there don't have the lines on the foils. Furthermore, it's confirmed that both small and large date coins were struck there, where the small dates were more common than the large dates. Although mintage numbers for Calcutta seem missing, both variants are still valuable and rare!

Have a look at this ancient website, I still use it for my Indian coins. http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database...eorge_VI.htm

Hello

Many thanks for the input and the site. Yes indeed I see that the coin is considered a Calcutta issue, the dots after the date confused me as that indicates Bombay. The site you mentioned did indeed have a picture of this coin, but not one of the large date Calcutta, they did not indicate rarity although I assume both are quite rare. NGC & PCGS both, have neither of these certified that I can find. I guess it will go to NGC with the hopes they will recognize the type and place in holder accordingly.
