I purchased it from the fun show on suspicion that it was undergraded. You guys confirmed my suspicions and gave the coin a net grade of F-14.5 What's the next step? Send it in to NGC? I think it's in a new PCGS holder so it must of been recently graded. https://coins.ha.com/itm/early-doll...yBids-101116 Edited by MikeF 01/07/2017 11:44 pm

Nice pick up Mike.
Did you buy it for your personal collection or to resell? If for a personal collection I would just leave it the way it is and readdress if I wanted to sell it. And opinions are coming from pictures. It is possible with the coin in hand the graders would grade it the same as it is now.

It's for my collection. I guess I could also send it in for a CAC bean.

It's a very pleasing coin; this, but for a few rim dings. IMHO, it's a F-12/15. Might the rim dings have caused PCGS to give it a VG-10? I'd be surprised if it got beaned.

Congratulations on your purchase. FUN is a huge show and many potential buyers also saw this coin so you need to assume it brought fair market value on the day it sold. The price seems reasonable for the coin.
Since you're keeping it, I would go the CAC route first and see what happens. It could upgrade to 12 on a given day but it could also no-grade just as easily so I'd stick with the PCGS VG10 holder unless I was feeling really lucky.

I would try to bean it first. If it beans, then off to NGC?

I'd send it into NGC for a crossover, but maybe thats just because I have an NGC membership. PCGS surely has a regrade option as well.

If it gets a green bean then further thought would be required but it would likely be worth a trip back to a TPG. And if it doesn't bean then leave it alone. I like it for what it is and in the PCGS VG10 holder. Few people ever own a Flowing Hair Dollar. Enjot it.

I wanted a 1795 dollar. There were 12 up for auction in that show. I carefully examined all of them and this dollar stuck out like a sore thumb as undergraded. I also like the eye appeal compared to the others. This coin in the following link was from the same auction and it's graded F-12. Which do you think is a better example? https://coins.ha.com/itm/early-doll...ption-071515

Lucky it is A no problems VG 10 with the rims the way they are . Way too much wear on the obverse portrait to make Fine. In the old days this was a VG with problems.

Pacificoin: I understand grading standards aren't what they used to be. I added pictures and a link of another coin from the same auction that graded f-12. I would love to hear your thoughts on that coin.

The clashed Die state example is in my opinion nicer and more desirable. Also looks more original. With less detractions. The first coin just doesn't tug at me. Over the years I owned a shop , I was lucky enough to acquire around 8 to 10 really original pieces from 1795 to 1803. They all graded from VG 8 to VF35 . No problems undamaged or unplayed with pieces are the exception rather than the norm. Be really really fussy and buy yourself a top end piece for the grade. Patience is sure to pay off. As a side bar to this topic, there is a great book on early Dollars , just can't find it in the Library right now.

If you regrade after CAC, don't you lose the sticker? Thats an expensive route to seeing if you want to regrade. A regrade is $30. I think its worth doing, but FH is a design that wears very well. Its hard to grade and its possible they got it right.

Leave it in the PCGS holder and send it to CAC. Don't send it to NGC.
