Considering that we're now in 2017, I thought it was time to complete my collection of 2016-dated coins. Thus, I've spent the last few days trying to noodle them all, with mixed success.

Here's a summary of my results (for Brisbane):

5c Standard: Not circulating
5c Changeover: Not circulating

10c Standard: Common (4.2%)
10c Changeover: Scarce (0.2%)

20c Standard: Common (8.8%)
20c Changeover: Not circulating

50c Standard: Common (1.3%)
50c Changeover: Scarce (0.6%)

$1 Standard: Common (1.7%)
$1 ANZAC: Common (2.5%)
$1 Changeover: Not circulating

$2 Standard: Common (3.2%)
$2 Changeover: Scarce (0.7%)
$2 Olympics/Paralympics: Scarce (0.06% each, or 0.33% for all six)

I've also had some unexpected surprises, like finding another 2013 Coronation $2 coin, another 2014 Remembrance Day $2 coin, and two 2014-dated $50 notes.

Here's the full set of results, obtained from 475x 5c coins, 479x 10c coins, 238x 20c coins, 478x 50c coins, 240x $1 coins, 600x $2 coins and 37x $50 notes.

If you've found any other 2016-dated coins in Brisbane (excluding the Woollies Olympic/Paralympic ones), please let me know in the comments below. Happy hunting!

Hi Hercules

Interesting "bar graph" results for the circulating Australian coins found during your noodling.

I had conducted a similar analysis using 5 cent coins previously. The results of the analysis of 798 of these coins are posted at http://goccf.com/t/141264&whichpage=4

From the analysis of the results with amounts of coins minted I noted that the older dates were under-represented in my stash of 798 coins.

Hi Squire,

I've done something similar, although I don't usually post it online. I'm also posting most of my updates on the Australian Coin Forum, because I seem to get more responses there.

These are the corresponding graphs from last year (6694 coins) and this year (1426 coins).

Hi Hercules

..... that's one Herculean effort of noodling, graph work and sight sapping dedication - thanks.

Is there any reason why you haven't shown the 2007 $1 MoR's in your dollar chart ? Yes, it is only available in Mint sets, as are the 1987, 1989, 1990 etc, and the 2012, but I'm curious as to why you have ommited the 2007 MoR's

cheers

You might as well ask why I don't include the 1995 20c Platypus or the 2005 50c COA. I treat them all as NCLT, so they don't appear in the graphs. The MSO years appear merely as placeholders, to indicate the passage of time. Even if I did find a coin from one of those years, I wouldn't list it, because I'd know it came from a mint set.

Hi Hercules

Looks like your analysis of 5 cent coins, proportion of coins noodled vs proportion of coins minted, has given similar results to mine.
It appears that there is a proportionally lower percentage of older 5 cent pieces within our ensemble of coins.
Within your statistics is particularly notable prior to 1998.
In my ensemble of 5 cent coins this becomes notable prior to 1995.

This gives rise to the interesting question. Is this caused by:
A: The loss of older coins by hoarders.
B: The loss of older coins in "wishing well's", "lucky fountains" etc
C: Or does the mint withdraw old coins out of circulation?

I think it's mostly due to the fact that they aren't worth much, and because they're very small, people don't go looking for them when they get lost. I've compiled similar statistics for the other denominations, and the problem because less and less as the coins become more valuable. Simply put, there are a lot of old 5c coins sitting around in people's houses that they simply can't be bothered to return to the bank.

Thanks for the explanation Hercules

So much for my theory about "Lucky Fountains" and "Wishing Wells"...

I don't think any of your theories are entirely incorrect. Older coins would have been hoarded more than newer coins, because they've had more time to be withdrawn from circulation. The Reserve Bank does destroy coins that have been heavily damaged, and because older coins have been in circulation longer than newer ones, they've had more time to be defaced. Finally, people making wishes in wishing wells would probably use the lowest denomination they had, and because this is usually the 5c, it's not surprising that there are so few left. The federal government is aware of this issue, but even they don't know for sure where all the coins are going.
