There you go guys...that's the best photos I can get with my phone. The front of the coin is pretty rough..but I guess I'd be to if I were over 80 years old... Thanks for any help.

looks like molten copper was pored on it and has slowly wore off. Only wild guess I could come up with.

Would it be advisable to send it off for grading just to see what they have to say?

Matt , I would not advise you to send it in , they'll probably just dismiss it and send it back with no answer. my advise is send it to Mike Diamond ,I don't know him but I heard he's the man a lot of members have confided in . I think he's your only choice . problem is you have to get a bunch of quality posts under your belt before the forum will let you PM him.

with T-bop - Mike Diamond is your man. He has already replied once on your post here so maybe he will visit again. Put a response on your post here that you would like to send it to him for inspection if it is Okay with him. Then he can PM you from there. That is my thought on how to get it accomplished, otherwise keep hanging out with us and then after a bit you will earn PM privileges. Plus, you have fun and learn about these great coins at the same time.

It's lighter than normal, but yet it looks like some added metal has flowed around ONE CENT and UNITED STATES. Oddly enough, the outlines we see on those words don't appear around IN GOD WE TRUST.

Thank you for the extra images.
Are you sure it isn't something that has been spilled on the coin, like glue or some type of resin?
I know sometimes photos can play tricks on our eyes and even looking at something in person can look like something it's not.

Why not give it an acetone soak anyway for the heck of it?

I also agree. Dip it in Acetone. If it is glue then it will come off.
