found this 1909 vdb coin in a box of jewelry I purchased.
it had a loop to wear as a pendant. I tested for 10k gold and was good but someone told me that it was common for people to plate them. I scratch a little deeper and sure enough copper, so I decided to take the loop off so that it could be a coin again. after carefully using the grinder the loop came off but now I'm more confused, I can see the gold then the copper but now there is silver under the copper . I again tested 10k gold and it holds some but I thought the coin was suppose to be all copper. did the mint make 1909 penny of other alloys?

No. It is bronze with plating/gilding.

If you plate gold directly onto many metals - and copper is one of them - over time, the gold 'disappears' down into the copper.

If memory serves (don't count on it): "amalgamation".

You need a barrier layer; electroless nickel rhodium (the memory is serving!) is a common modern choice.

Cheers,

Yes, chrome does not adhere to steel very well, two other metals are plated onto the steel before the chrome.

Geez! Loogle it!
