I mentioned in my Introduction Post| that I was awaiting delivery of an 1893 Columbian Exposition commemorative half. It arrived today, and I'm curious what you all think it's grade might be. I'm quite happy with my purchase, but thought in the interest of practicing my grading I'd ask for other opinions.

To me, it looks pretty good.
Clean, uniform color.
Some small scratches in the field on the obverse, and a few small spots (unsure if nicks or colorations) on both obverse and reverse.
Image is crisp and clear, with fine lines visible in Columbus hair (some not apparent in photos), the Santa Maria's sails, the globe lines, etc.
There's clearly visible texture in the cloth around Columbus' neck, and in the wood and waves of the SM.

The reverse seems to be a few degrees offset as compared to the obverse, but that seems to be the case with images of others I've seen as well.

In '1893' the '3' appears a bit deeper than the '189' leading me to believe this may be a repunched date?

So, any thoughts?

Here's a few more pictures taken by the person I purchased it from. They're better than mine, and it's most definitely the same coin when viewing them side by side.

Looks cleaned to me.

Also, something else just looks "off" about this coin to me...

I was a bit concerned it might've been cleaned, as it seems a little TOO nice for the price a paid, but I really don't have the experience to gauge myself.

There's pretty minimal scratching though, what makes you suspect cleaning?

I'm happy with the purchase either way, just hoping to learn...

The reverse looks to be very well struck.
Rest in Peace

Nice coin, but it is cleaned and not professionally either. Look between the letters of UNITED and inside the closed digits for the crud. At least the cleaner didn't dig or scratch at it. Not a pro grader by any means, guess its AU55 or so with sharp details.
Rest in Peace

Nice coin, but is cleaned. See some crud inside date and in between UNITED.

Agree AU, but pics are inconclusive to me on the cleaning aspect.

Thanks everyone. I agree it's been cleaned, and I'm fine with that. I didn't pay much so I think I did alright on it, and more than that it's a cool coin and one I'm happy to own even if that does reduce it's value. It's still a beautiful coin with a pretty nice amount of detail; too bad it was cleaned or it'd be something really special.

I stopped by a local coin shop yesterday and brought this coin with just to spur some conversation. The dealer immediately noted it had been cleaned. I asked how he could tell, and he noted that the color was unnatural for a coin of this age, something which is probably a bit harder to tell from the pictures above. He also cited some very light lines in the field that area really only visible on a loop. I asked what he might pay if I were to sell, and he said that he probably wouldn't pay much over melt at $6-8, but that he'd likely ask around $13-15. I paid $15, so I think I did reasonably well given that it's not really something I expect to turn around and sell anytime soon.

He also pulled out a few Morgans of identical year/mintage and showed me the differences between one which was cleaned, one which was uncleaned, and one which was uncleaned but in a much brighter natural state. It was a really great experience to be able to look at these side by side, with someone more experienced guiding my focus. It seemed he appreciated that I wanted to understand, not argue or complain.

I bought a few Kennedy halfs, including a pretty nice ungraded 1970-D. They'll be nice additions to my book, and hopefully helped him get something out of the time he spent with me. It's the nearest shop to my house, so I'll likely be back in the future.

I appreciate all the thoughts of those who've replied here too!
