The coin is likely genuine, but the edge has been "spooned," where a spoon was used (in most cases) to raise the rim of a coin for some reason. It creates a wire rim and makes the edge completely smooth.

Once you used the term spooned I was able to research and it does fit the characteristic of the raised edge nature of the coin.

Somewhat interesting in itself. Who did it and how long ago? Questions that will never be answered.
