The-32nd-Hwadong-Auction-In-Seoul,-Korea

Ladies and Gentleman collectors in Korea, the 32nd Hwadong Auction is coming soon~

Date/Time: 18 March 2017 @ 1030
Place : Seoul, Seodaemoon-gu, Chungjeongno Poongsan Building (Underground Floor 1)

This auction begins at 1030 with an introduction from the CEO of Poongsan and will be done completely in Korean; however, a good percentage of the words are loan words from English. Also, I will be there to help translate. :)

Additionally, the bid prices for every item will be represented in Korean Won, USD, Chinese Yuan, and Japanese YEN on a screen to the side of the stage, so you can pay in either! Make sure you bring cash or have the ability to wire transfer to their account. No credit/debit cards! If you really want to grab some good stuff, I would bring around $5,000 with you, but you can normally win a seed coin Sangpyeong Tongbo for ~125,000 Won (~$110) if you don't want to go crazy. Once you win or you've had enough, you can leave at any time and pay outside at the desk.If you want to bid and don't speak Korean, I will be there to help, just notify me ahead of time.

Even if you don't want to spend money, you can come and enjoy watching millions of dollars being thrown around and get a free lunch out of it as well! Last year they sold nearly 7500 lots and it was a full house.

To bid on items, you will need a Korean form of ID (Korean DL, Foreigner Registration Card, etc). If you are US military, let me know and I will call and ask if your CAC will work. There are auction fees on top of each auction if you win(10% I think?).

Lastly, this auction will not just feature Korean coins/bills. They will have Chinese, European, American, Japanese, and many other countries' stuff to bid on. There will be lots and lots of gold.

If I get a lot of interest from folks that don't speak Korean/don't know how to get around, I can schedule a place for us to meet and we can go together. Please let me know by the day before. I hope this gets to as many of our Korean coin/bill collectors in Korea as possible and I hope to see you all there~

Sweet! I have heard that they often have some neat Chinese stuff, and even know of one Dutch collector who ships his stuff half-way around the world for them to be auctioned there. Last year, was there anything that would be my cup of tea? (pre 221BC Chinese). And how about this year? I seem not to be able to find the catalogue anywhere on their site, but I don't know whether this is because of my limited Korean skills, or because they simply haven't published it yet. Anything you will be bidding on?

Mika,

The Hwadong website doesn't open up at my office desk, but I have the printed book of items sold last year and I can post the link here for The 31st Hwadong Auction. I don't remember BC-era coins, but I will double check. Also the list of items for the auction in March will be posted in February, if I recall correctly. They allow 1-2 weeks for sellers to bring/send their stuff to the auction. When the list of items comes out for the 32nd, I will edit this post with the information.

As for me, I will be aiming for a few things. Assuming they have similar items as last time, I will be looking for the Hangeul Day commemorative, the 1998 BoK Mint Set, any Korean coin errors, and a seed coin/seed coin set.

Now I see why you don't see any of the Chinese coins. They were lots 414-455 and there were absolutely no bids on them.

Lots 414-419 Were Hsien Feng coins from the mid 1800s; 10, 20, 50 (2), 100 (2) cash coins

The rest are flower cash coins and decorative coins. The end of the lot is, and I'm sorry for this, coins with people "mating". After that there is lots of silver from the Republic of China and silver/gold coins/sets.
