Hello, wondering if someone could give me some advise on what kind of coin scale to buy and magnifying glass to buy. Searched several websites but so many to choose from, not really sure what is needed to weigh coins.

I have been collecting coins for several months now and have lots to learn. I was told first thing I need to do is buy a coin scale & a magnifying glass, can someone please give some advise?

Would really appreciate it.
Thank you

Don't count on me as expert by any means, as I have only been into this about 6 months. I bought a 'Smart Weigh SWS600' digital scale for less than $10 on Amazon and it does a great job distinguishing copper and zinc cents.

As far as a magnifier, that is a different subject. Can't make a recommendation there but it seems that the power that some of them advertise is not the actual magnification the glass has. I'm sure some more knowledgeable will comment. Good luck.

For a coin scale, it's advisable to get one that weighs to two decimal points; and most people seem to favour a 20 x magnification.
Both can be found on ebay quite cheaply.

I've been collecting coins since the 1960s and have never owned a coin scale. But, I can see where one could come in handy on occasion.

You almost need two magnification devices. I have a small (2" diameter) inexpensive magnifying glass that I use quite often. For inspecting fine details, I have a folding 10X triplet loupe (like jewelers and geologists use). Get a decent name brand like Bausch & Lomb or Belomo (which is a good bang for the buck).

I have a B&L 10X, but mostly use my B&L 7X for everyday work. It doesn't miss much!

Been collecting for well over 60 years. Somewhere in the past I purchased several scales. Almost all still in the original boxes. Picked up several cheap magnifying glasses at a local flea market. Been OK for me.
