No edge lettering on Indian golds.
Weight is first thing toward verification.
Test for gold in a non destructive way.
Check for obvious fakery.
Ask an expert.

Nominal weight is ~4.2 grams with a diameter of ~17.8mm. Check those for starters and post an image if you can. What is the date/mm?

If you can show US coins you have or are considering we can give opinions on authenticity and grade. Checking size and weight as listed above is essential.

Or you can purchase TPG'd coins that give you a near perfect test of legitimacy.

These are the main coins I buy/sell/collect. Post a few pics and we can give you a good idea.

Buy coins that are graded and slabbed by TPG's. I am getting to the point where even with my LCS guy I tend to think the way he grades coins is arbitrary. Let the buyer beware. Unless you really have mucho experience in coin grading it is easy to miss something that may really hurt the value of the coin you are buying even if the dealer missed it also and is honest. If you are going to spend more than a few hundred dollars on a coin you might as well get one that is graded because they are usually not much more expensive than raw coins at least online. The 2.5 dollar Indian head is just about the only USA gold coin most collectors can ever hope to finish.

Well its not coins that I have, I was looking at buying some soon, and I was wondering what areas I should focus on to identify fakes

Focus on any raw coin that is a key date to focus on possible fakes IMO.
