I bought my first box of cents today. I've mainly been focusing on nickels and wanted to try something new. I've read that is good to keep any cents pre 1982. I've only opened five and as you can see, I'm getting quite a bit Before, I was only collecting wheat cents and anything else good. I just wanted to know from the more experienced folks if it's good to keep them or to go ahead and toss them in the re-roll jar? Thanks!

I say toss em. There is no shortage of copper and you can't melt cents anyways. John1

Save the wheats, of course, but toss the rest. CRHing cent rolls from banks is an increasing waste of time each year with today's staggering production runs. The odds against finding a wheat are tiny, much less one of any collector value.

Some people keep copper cents because they are worth more than a cent (1.77 cents each the last I saw). It's up to you whether or not you want to keep them. It's not a lot of money lost in holding onto them, and there seems to be a market for it on ebay. I see $15 face in 1959-1982 cents going for $28.50, with 44 lots sold. If you do decide to throw them back, make sure you check for varieties first!

Unfortunately, the laws forbid anyone from melting circulating currency. If you are talking about metal value, those copper pennies are worth keeping. I say you should keep them as you never know what will happen in the future!

Thanks for the feedback all. I decided to put them all in a seperate jar for now. I'll probably get rid of them, eventually. I ended up finding nine wheat cents (40,44,47s,49d,50d,(2)55d,56d,57d) and a few Canadian pennies from 1944-1986. I'm ready to turn them in and try again!

Coinfrog, I must be really lucky then! I find anywhere from 1 wheat per 2 rolls to 2 or 3 wheats per roll!

Return them and hope that the next lot of cents has an LWC or two (and whatever else is 'good'). Hoard silver or gold over copper in my opinion. Good luck on the hunt!

One time I went out of town and went into one of the WoodForest Banks inside Wal*Mart and got a box of Cents, while I was still in Wal*Mart I decided to open the box to see if their were any enders or if they were brand new, sadly they were all new. So since I was out of town I didn't want to carry a box of brand new Cents, so I walked back to them and told them I get coins to go through them to find old ones, so I ask them if they knew if they had a box of circulated Cents. They went back into the vault and came back out with a box that had had 1959-1960's written on it! The whole box were Cents from the 60's except two 1959 rolls and a roll of Canadians. Those are the only copper Cents that I am keeping. It's really up to you whether or not you should keep them. Also,

Welcome! I am saving my copper LMC. I haven't lost anything, they are worth one cent each. The wheat cents and Canadians are keepers because there are fewer and fewer as time goes by. On the other hand, I turned in my State Quarters hoard to buy some silver proof sets. And I tossed $100 in half dollars into the Coinstar machine. For now I'll hold the coppers and see what develops.

If you got the space and can afford to have the cash tied up then keep them. I keep them. Not to get rich, but to save them from being melted. The law is irrelevant. As sure as construction sites are being robbed of their copper wire, cents are being melted.
