Does anyone have an idea what could have caused the striping on the cent?

Improperly mixed alloy. It is called a woody cent. No premium.

Not improper alloy, it was caused by dirt in the planchet rollers. They are fairly common in 1980, I only keep the 2 sided ones like yours.

Yep, it's a "woodie". A circulated coin like yours with some corrosion issues probably is not worth much if any above normal value. But, it's still cool and worth keeping. There are folks that collect woodies and a nice one might go for a bit more than normal value if you hook up with the right buyer. Guess this gives me a good excuse to show off my best woodie: 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent.

Not a "true" woody. Roller stains. John1

BadThad is right. This is not a woody, at least not in the traditional sense. Regardless, I still like them.

Wow batboy I thought you stole my pics for a second. Had to do a double take. My "grain" runs in a different direction. It's a nice coin you have though.
