I have 3 indian head Buffalo nickels one has a date barely and the other 2 have no dates on them due to their condition. The spot that is supposed to have the date is a smooth surface now. I just wanted to see if there was another way to tell what year these nickels are and also can anyone tell me what material they were made from for them to be so worn down like they are.

Or save your money with common household items . White vinegar & peroxide combo will bring up the dates on dateless Nickels . you just have to experiment with the right mixture .
Rest in Peace

Best to experiment outside, too. Gets rather smelly. Let us know how your finds turn out.

Also, don't forget to check the back for the mint mark, if there is one. Mint marked coins have a better chance of having some value, even if they do have the Nic-a-date used.
