Has anyone noticed the huge drop in the values in some of the PCGS American Eagles? One in particular caught my eye: 2006 20th Anniv. Reverse Proof 70 went from $1,100 to $750 in the last couple of days. Does anyone have any explanations?

The PCGS price guide is a marketing tool and not a true reflection of the value of any coin.

As far as the 2006 revese proof goes, with 250,000 of these coins minted, I would think $750 is still a grossly inflated price.

They now pretty much match teletrade auction close prices in the keys of the series I follow.
i.e. jeffersons and 2 Cents. Previously they were about twice what the coins actually sold for. eg 1972s PR69 dcam 5c pcgs $225 teletrade last three closes $200,$200,$220 by the time you have added the buyers premium they are pretty much the same. this is not the case on the non key coins where PCGS is still twice the actual prices

What was the U.S. Mint price for these reverse proofs when they went on sale? When you could order them directly from the mint without 3rd party trickle down price grabs..?

actually on a few series of coins PCGS is falling behind on their prices (in other words you can't find a coin in the grade for the price PCGS has listed, sometimes you have to almost double the price to actually get one in that grade)

Bcow,

I don't have any details about this particular price change, but I have some general info. PCGS has a reputation of being extremely stingy with assigning the '70' grade to any coins, so a PCGS MS70 or PR70 commands a premium for that reason. If there was a recent price drop, I'd guess that several more received the PR70 grade recently (increasing supply), or possibly not as many people are trying to acquire one in PR70 (reducing demand).
