It looks similar to what happens to Dryer Coins. A Dryer Coin is a coin that becomes stuck in a dryer or a similar machine and gets rolled on it's edge continuously until the rim rolls over the sides of the coin. The coin will appear thicker, but in reality, it's just the edge that has flattened out.
If you were to weight this coin against a normal looking Nickel, it would probably weigh the same.
Coins like this are considered damaged, and not a mint error.
