I recently had a topic about a 1955 S that was very well answered. I learned about Cuds-on-Coins.com which was very helpful.

The obverse of this penny looks fine to me. What I'm curious about is the first "S" in STATES on the reverse. There is no visible wear on this coin, and that letter is all but obliterated.

If you hold the coin at an angle, you can see the faintest S. How did this happen?

to the forum!

That is a filled die error.
Sometimes debris or grease will fill up parts of the die and those parts don't get transferred to the coin.

Well neat!

What, if any, impact does that have on a coin's grade or value?

I could argue more or less on value, and I could argue no impact or worse for grading.
