What I find interesting is the huge range in perspective... All are valid yet very seldom agree

Well I suppose I've done this and actually still doing this! Let me explain....about 9 maybe 10 years ago I took a mixture of coins Silver dollars, silver halves, silver quarters, also a few cents copper and clad and some clad quarters and halves. I stored them outside under my shed and eventually moved them in my pool shed. They have been out in the heat and humidity and in the cold and freezing weather all of that time. So in the spring I will look for them and see how they look. A few years ago some were turning dark . Oh yes I did put them with some old envelopes that I bought from an antique dealer going out of business. I sure there is some sulfur in the paper. At least that was my hope. It will be interesting to see if any thing has happened to them.

Btw, I personally consider that natural toning

Quote: Call me Old fashioned But I refuse to buy or even recognise these Manufactured toners. Forced natural toning and Artificial toning is exactly the same thing What is being proposed is AT no matter how you cut it. TRUE toning took place over the course of decades and in some cases, centuries, and that is not going to be duplicated at its essence and soul no matter what the methodology, mindset, opinion etc... You can replicate all you want but it will never be the same as what time created on its own accord with no intentional assistance.

So, DS, for you, intent is key?

Why is trying to recreate the same conditions that are known to create desirable tone coins any different than than existing NT toned coins. If I had original quality mint bags, put high grade Morgan dollars into the bag. Left them in my safe for a couple decades, would those toned coins be any different than NT coins we have now. Would it really matter if my intentions were to just store my coins or to create toned coins. The coins would be exactly the same no matter what my intentions are.

I agree, GR58, however it is interesting to hear where people draw the line between NT and AT

Well what I'm trying to do is what I would consider Natural Toning just because there is no added chemicals per say. I realize even though I have placed some in envelopes that may contain some sulfur content, I would equate that to a collector storing a coin for safe keeping (as in older coin albums or folders). So even if the experiment fails "Nothing beats a Try but a Failure". So at least I've tried. People either like and appreciate toned coins for their beauty or the dislike them as not being original state. So be it either your a fan or not!

Slightly different IMO, if your hindsight knowledge of what the coin can look like by doing so is your goal. I will try to articulate my thoughts differently based on this great question posed by GR and the OP ("Intent"); and that is to say, the coins we have today from the 19th and early 20th century are a result of storage methods that were not intended and the resulting tone is purely a consequence of the lack of knowledge of storage environment. I believe that to be the difference. And yes, there are probably some cases where people recognized what was happening and kept up with it anyway. I think that is an extreme minority versus the natural course of time and consequence.
