Hi all: The half below is graded XF40 by PCGS. I question whether it makes the grade or not. Is that just weakness I see on the reverse? Any comments/opinions on this coin would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time! KK

It is a weak looking 40. I thought it was a guess the grade before seeing the grade and was thinking 30 or 35. Even if the reverse is considered strike weakness there's not an XF coin there IMO. I could buy into VF35 a lot more easily.

 Shy of XF-40. I would agree with VF-35

I have seen a lot worse in a PCGS holder. Personally I agree with the others and think it falls short of XF but it is one of the nicer PCGS XF pre-Civil War coins I have seen. It also has great eye appeal. Nice coin.

Yes, I really like the look of the coin, but I didn't think it was a 40 either. Nice color though, no evidence of cleaning.

That is a very nice coin, classy looking....eye appeal may have held it into this grade level? Why not

Quote: ....eye appeal may have held it into this grade level? It could have. Market grading may have landed it in an XF holder even if technically it's a VF+. It's hard to get out of the market grading paradigm. We unconsciously net grade coins all the time and the reverse may be at work here.

Thank you all for your comments. I decided to purchase the half, even though it was clearly shy of its assigned grade. As mentioned above, I will sometimes overlook overgrading on a specimen that has an attractive appearance, especially a low-mintage issue. This is the case here. Thanks again for your help.

borderline and I can see why they pushed it to a 40 as the obverse is strong enough to warrant it.
