For those of you who have true, totally complete Lincoln Penny sets where did you find the majority if your key dates? I was left a complete set by a family member, but have started my own just for the challenge. For those of you who put in the time (and presumably money) to complete your sets where did you find your key dates? The 09 S VDB and such? Also, any idea what it cost you in the end? I'd imagine you can only get so far by roll hunting or searching through pocket change.

I have been getting the key dates (not just for LHC) at coin shows. There are usually several dealers that have what I want. I make the rounds, do some talking, and try to get the best coin for the best price.

I am with you photo. A lot of the stuff I have was left to me too. I have key dates that think were found in circulation but I dunno. I just search online websites and try to find the cheapest place to buy them

photoeric21, finding a key date searching through change would be like hitting the lottery. It's a near impossibility, even for semi-keys. I purchased all my keys and semi-keys off the internet. 09-S VDB from https://www.libertycoins.com1914-D and 1922 Plain from ebay. I also bought a 1909-VDB off ebay but most won't consider that a semi-key. 1972 Double Die I bought from a coin shop. Still looking for a nice XF+ 1909-S

I, also, inherited my set but I have upgraded and added over the years. Most of my upgrades have been with a long time retired dealer and friend; he and I would search his inventory and if we found a better coin it would go into my book and my old coin would go back into his stash. Not a bad deal! I did buy a better 09S vdb and I added a 55DDO and 72DDO off of ebay at very reasonable prices. afernbaugh

I've been working on my Lincoln Cent collection since about 1972 and it's still not complete!

COOL! That's how I got started too. I am lucky, all the key dates were in my Grandfather's completed Whitman album. The first goal I made was to have all 1930-2007 in red BU condition. I simply upgraded them all, they were relatively inexpensive and I predicted they would rapidly go up in price. I think I was right because the 1930 series are moving up wth the 40's not far behind. I'm seeing most of the good BU wheats well cherry picked by now. Third party grading adds HUGE value and it seems to have become more popular than collecting. I believe this has lead to a major pickfest the last 10-15 years..... people in search of MS65 and up coins for profit. The vast majority of BU cent rolls are filled with spotted or lower grade MS coins. The only way I've picked up my highest quality BU's was a local coin shop. I just get lucky when a seller off the street walks in with Grandpa's coins he inherited. My next goal is upgrading the 1909-1929 series. I did manage to replace all the Good rated coins with VG and up sans the 1914D. I have been shooting for AU-MS coins, it's been quite challenging and expensive. Good Luck!

I have a few sets but only one set complete and I finished the one set after a lot of years of pulling them from circulation.( wheat's were still the circulating cent when I started collecting so it wasn't too hard) but after years and years of changing out coins for better coins and after lots of years of not seeing the one set that is complete. some of you know exactly what I am saying when I say that each and every coin in my first book had a very small finger print right across good ole Abe's face. most of the keys were purchased back in the 70's when they wasn't that bad to pick up on a Privates wages. and nope this uncirculated set had zero finger prints lol
and here a note for all you YN's and new collectors. Here in the US we have never had a coin in circulation that was a penny. that is Canada and GB or to make it easy the Queens money says penny on it not our's Gary

Ah, the good old days. in 1957, when I was 13, the local postmaster had a gigantic container full of lincolns. I brought my whitman folders down to the post office (it was a tiny post office) and he let me go through the entire container. Except for two or three keys--you know which ones--I filled the folders. Oh by the way, the folders cost all of 35 cents!

I need ten or so upgrades for my Lincoln wheat set. As soon as I have enough posts I am planning on seeing what might be available here. There are no reliable coin shops here and ebay is just too expensive considering the shipping costs for any common date coins from the 20's and 30's. afernbaugh
