From the questions I ask in this forum I think it's clear that I am no expert in 19th century Mexican coins. But I was still surprised by this listing, and several others like it at the same auction site. The "Mo69" designation here has me mystified - what does it mean?

I think it's like a KP number but for...
Dunigan, Mike, and J. B. Parker, Resplandores: Cap and Ray 8 Reales of The Republic of Mexico

I've seen DP-Mo# before, so it might be the coin # from their book.

scstrawn Yes, that is correct. Mo69 is the Dunigan and Parker number for the 1884 Mo MH which they used in Resplandores.

The numbering system they developed is not tied to the date on the coin. It starts with the 1823 MoJM which is given number Mo01 this is the first known coin of the Republican series issued at Mexico City. The Mo02 is the 1824 MoJM which uses the Hookneck or profile eagle design. The Mo03 is 1824 MoJM using the more standard facing eagle design. So in 1824 two numbers are assigned to 1824 MoJM based on the design type. The final issue is Mo85 the 1897 MoAM.

A change in design does not always translate to a second number. A case in point is the Mo09 the 1830 MoJM. This date has an extremely rare mule which employed an 8 Escudo eagle die. This variant is not numbered on its own. In some other mints there are cases where up to three design styles occur under one number (for example Zs67). There are numerous cases of changes in Cap and or eagle dies being made in one year but normally a new number is not assigned.

The D&P numbers are also changed for different assayer initials so Mo12 is 1833 MoMJ and Mo13 is 1833 MoML. I believe that in one case (again a different mint) there are 5 different assayer initial combinations resulting in 5 numbers for a single year.

They used a closed number sequence from Mo01 to Mo85. If a new discovery is made of a date which would add to the sequence there is no provision for correction. This caused problems with Hermosillo already. There the numbering sequence began with the 1861HoFM as Ho01. Apparently later there were discoveries of three earlier Ho dates 1835 HoPP, 1836 HoPP and 1839 HoPR. These were numbered Ho00A, Ho00B and Ho00C. The Ho00A was actually a copy of a drawing taken from Riddell's "Monograph of the Silver Dollar, Good and Bad" (1844) that was presently unknown in any collection. Since the publication of D&P a second example of an 1835 HoPP using a different cap die has been discovered. It is referred to as an Ho00A. What would happen if an 1837 Ho PP was discovered? It falls between B and C.

Anyway it is a system that dates to 1997 and is used by TPG's sporadically.
