So I bought this 1928 Peace dollar the other day - turns out it has a lot of scratches/damage where the mint mark would be. Not an expert on US coins by any means, but surely I'll have to catalogue this as a 1928S?

I would. It looks like someone was pretty motivated to remove the mint mark at some point

Yes. The motivation was to turn it into a 1928-P Peace dollar, which is a key date. This has been done many times, but seldom as badly as this.

I hope you didn't pay too much for this coin. The post mint damage is severe.
Rest in Peace

I wouldn't catalog it as anything. I would return it for full purchase price...

Thanks everyone. I was aware of the scratches before agreeing to buy it, so no problems with the seller. Paid $25.50 for it, expecting it to be a 1928 S, which fills a hole in my collection anyway :-)
