Hi guys, after a long pause here I am again. And with something seems rather interesting. I think that I have found in my Constantine(I , II , Licinius , Valentinian) AE lot something that looks like a Procopius coin, wich I found can be extremly rare. It looks like Nicomedia mint with mintmark SMN Gamma.
Obverse: D N PROCOPIVS P F AVG. Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Interesting here is that I can't find coin like this from Nicomedia with right bust ?
Reverse: REPARATIO FEL TEMP Procopius standing facing, head right,
holding labarum and shield set on ground.
With weigh 1.95gr and size 14-16mm.

So what do you think guys about this coin ?

Nice find!

The bust doesn't look like Procopius in the pics... almost like he doesn't have a beard? Can you take closer pictures?

The prevailing theory is that the Mint had a "master punch" used to create emperor portraits. It was very common for old portraits to be used with new legends until the mint employees found out what the new emperor looked like. I wonder if perhaps they had a dusty Constantius II portrait laying around and just used that?

Good find at any rate!

Quick check.

Ooops, mea culpa. I had my gun sights on the wrong coin. So much for a quick check. Please disregard that analysis. The least I can do to set it right is summarize what RIC IX has to say. I should have been looking at this:

I read the mint mark as either SMH<gamma> (Heraclea) or SMN<gamma> Nicomedia. I do not see any dots leading or following.

Nicomedia had an AE2 module version of this type for Procopius in which the obverse portrait faces right instead of left. But the mint mark in this larger module has a leading dot. On the other hand, the dimensions you gave are for an AE3, and these smaller coins from Nicomedia all face left on the obverse.

A similar situation holds for Heraclea too. Right facing obverse on the larger module, and only left facing for the smaller size.

So much for RIC IX

It's definitely this type:

I found one in an uncleaned lot as well, albeit a "less rare" type:

When I have the coin in my hand, I can read without a hitch those letters.

I see what looks like a little scruff of a beard, but without clearer pictures it difficult to say. If it's him it would be a rare find indeed.
