The nickel dollars in the blue RCMP single cases and nickel dollar cased singles were, as far as I can tell, really early (and good) PL strikes. To find a 1973 specimen strike nickel dollar, you have to dive into the Prestige 'Double Dollar' sets with that notorious red fluff that basically ruined the coins unless the set was kept in low humidity or removed from the red fluff early on. That stuff even ruined the relatively inert nickel coins... which were originally struck with mirrored devices and mirrored fields. This coin was from a "Red Fluff" set, but for some reason, while the cent and other coins were ruined, the nickel dollar remained relatively unscathed - you can just see a hint of the spotted hazing on the obverse from the red fluff... I think I rescued this coin just in time!! The cameo on that dollar was breathtaking, so I decided to protect the coin in a PCGS holder. This is one example where the grade does not matter, the strike and cameo are what I love about this coin. Imagine what it looked like prior to the alteration from the red fluff, it would have been an amazing black & white deep cameo... like a modern day proof. http://www.PCGS.com/cert/%2083461005 "Discovery follows discovery, each both raising and answering questions, each ending a long search, and each providing the new instruments for a new search." -- J. Despite the minor hazing it's the most eye appealing '73 ever seen. Congrats!

Beautiful!
One reason for the red fluff is the original owner couldn't resist the temptation of carefully peaking to see if the quarter was a large bust variety, That caused the seal on the plastic overlay to get broken and the flocking to deteriorate quicker than it might have otherwise. I hold the evidence although at the time it wasn't intended to become an experiment.

Sorry to hear that bit of bad news. I guess there is some consolation to be had in the fact that it's the finest known.

Bad news? Care to elaborate on that?
