The improperly annealed Nickels turn a very dark gray shade or black. Sometimes they may have a bit of blue or purple tint also. The only Jefferson nickels that I have seen this on or even heard about are from the mid to late 50's, 1958 and 1959 being the most "common" dates. These are really not common coins. When you see an improperly annealed nickel, or Black Beauty as they are sometimes called, it will leave an impression on you and you will never mistake anything else for it. What you have on this coin is known as toning and is somewhat common. Keep looking and asking, someday you will be the one answering the questions.
