Greetings, My mother found this coin a long time ago and doesn't even remember when and where. She was cleaning out the closet and came across it again. She showed it to me and all I can tell there seems to be Greek lettering, a face, and a cobra emerging from a basket. Searched the net for an hour but couldn't find it. Does anyone know what it is and if it is even a "real" coin? Thanks for all your help! Jonathan
Don't know what it is, but the pock mark on bust is good indication of a cast copy. The only thing I could make out from fuzzy pix was DEO above head, isn't that Latin? A papal medal perhaps?
to the family! Jonb, we'll need to call you "sloop" for the old Beach Boys song...oh my, I've dated myself!
The coin is a Roman provincial of the emperor Severus Alexander from I believe the province of Perinthos. The dimple in the center is called a Centration dimple and is normal on provincial coins.
The "pock" mark is actually is a centering hole made during flan preparation and indicates it is a Roman provincial coin. I have a look. I'm sure one of our experts can assist as well.
