From what I'm hearing, there are private citizens that are pulling the copper's by the million's. There using the ryedale machine, and running full time operation's. If the fed, or any other organization are also doing this, I'm not so sure that the copper penny is going to be around for much longer. You don't see much silver floating around anymore, do you? I personally am trying to go thru at least a box a week, and I'm separating them by decade, that way I know what I got, so I can go back thru them later. I'll be saving mine for the collectors, after all the rest have been melted. They'll probably fetch a higher price that way anyway.

Hi Kurt, I am going thru about two boxes a week and keeping everything worth having including copper. Probably have about $500, now. I am finding about 20% copper in every box. As far as not keeping it, you are looking at the dates anyway, it does not take any longer to throw the copper in a separate bucket and some day it will buy yo a nice coin.

The Feds cam melt copper and we private citizens can't? Totally unfair; the next thing you know will be that we can't print our own currency anymore......

A few weeks ago I bought 4 boxes of pennies. 2 each from 2 different banks. All 4 boxes were 1982 or later. I was shocked. They both had the same CWI and inspection number, so someone turned in a HUGE batch of copper sorted out pennies. I just got another box yesterday and it had about 17% copper with 10 wheat pennies with a 1920 and a 1936. They are still out there.

I think there was a topic on here somewhere about some company (not government) removing copper pennies. I believe they got shut down/in trouble.

A little information is a dangerous thing. I just jumped up and sorted the copper pennies from our spare change!

The Wall Street stated this morning that gas could see $4.00 this summer. This will drive copper and all metals higher. Just like with silver, you will eventually be able to sell copper for melt. We will see a cent worth a nickel in short order. I am going thru cents, anyway, so why not put the copper away if you have room. I intend to set aside $1,000 and wait. Heck money will always be money so I have not lost anything. I like the idea of trade $1,000 in for a new $5,000 coin. Jim

I must live in an area where no one cares about copper. Out of all the penny rolls I have checked, I would say that 50% were 1982 or older, with 2-3 wheats per roll. I got 2 pennies in my change at dunkin donuts this morning, a 1982 and a 1975...
However, no silver in any of the dime and quarter rolls I have checked...

So everyone's been busy sorting copper. I just looked at the change in my wallet and my co-worker's and found 10 pre 1982s. Then I checked the weight and they're all 3.11g. Now that I got interested in this, I'm going to pick up some rolls from the back.

I ah found any trouble searching boxes of cents for coppers and wheats. I average about 600 coppers per box, 10 wheats per box, and 5 canadians per box, though I have only checked 3 boxes so far! Though In a box of nicles I found 1 silver 43-S.
