There is a lot of die crumbling on this one, so I am not entirely certain, but it does appear possible that the first N in BRITANNIA has been struck over an A. There is a LOT going on with that letter especially when comparing it to the other N. Thoughts?

Well, there's certainly SOMETHING going on there, but hard to say for sure exactly what. It could be an N over A, it could be a badly repaired N, or it could be a Cud caused by die damage. The preceding A is also odd looking, there seems to be some extra metal under that letter too.

I am inclined to believe it is all just die damage, but the N had a LOT more going on then the rest of the coin. It's not a bad example regardless, even if the die is a little late in its life.

Comparing to the other A's in Britannia, it doesn't look like an A under there, but something else that happened. Maybe like what Howarth said, a Cud.

Not saying I am right, but I am thinking die damage as well.

As we're talking Cuds, how about this one for excess metal!
