Royal Canadian Mint - Designed by Canadian artist Jan Poynter, your coin combines life-like colour and detailed engraving to re-create the springtime display of a lilac in full bloom. This depiction showcases the Preston lilac (Syringa x prestoniae), which was created in 1920 at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, Ontario, by Canada's first female hybridist: Isabella Preston (1881-1965). The realistic representation of this late blooming, Canadian variety is in keeping with the style of traditional botanical illustrations, which is particularly fitting given the lilac's rich history. The application of vivid mauve and deep green colours capture the magnificence of the blooms and foliage; but a separate depiction of a branch beneath the shrub highlights the more tubular, open-flowering nature of the Preston 'Isabella' (Villosae Group) blossoms. To the left is a close-up view of the purple blooms that have become synonymous with the uplifting fragrance and colours of spring.

I was so disappointed that no custom packaging came with this coin. The cherry blossom coin last year did. RCM listen up! I am tired of maroon clamshells and being lost in a "sea of black sleeves!"

@New1954 unfortunately it looks like another downward spirl from the Mint.

This is the plain black 2017 $8 Lion Dance outter box compared to the very nice colourful glossy outer box of the 2016 $8 Dragon Dance.

To add insult to injury, the Mint increased the mintage from 20k to 30k this year too.

Years ago when I lived in Montreal we had such gorgeous "lilac sur tige" (single trunk) that produced these huge and wonderful grape-like flowers. We eventually lost the tree due to carpenter bees.

Nice addition to any collection dedicated to flowers.

@CC-Ottawa

It really is so sad what is happening with the quality of RCM packaging. The coins that I purchase from other mints mostly all have decorative packaging displaying the artwork. The comparison of sleeves from 2016 and 2017 are the perfect examples of what I feel the RCM is doing to cut corners with no graphic beauty box and more mintage is truly shameful on their parts. This year I have cancelled orders based solely on this reason. I originally ordered the subscription for the new 3 ten ounce coins that everyone is raving about: especially the first one in the series!! You know which one it is. When I really took a look and noticed that it came with a cheap maroon clamshell and a black sleeve, I cancelled the order. At almost $900.00 per coin, you would think that the RCM would offer a wooden box and a graphic beauty box depicting these great coins.

I do not understand what is happening at the RCM with their marketing and production team. If they keep cutting corners then I too will keep cutting my spend with them.
