So a question for the long time collectors, buyers of gold Maple Leafs.

Question- how are these holding up thus far? In other words, are brown spots a big problem with these? How do they age over time? How is the luster on the bullion maple compared to say the gold Eagle or other bullion coins, such as the Pandas?

Thoughts, experiences and more appreciated!

Honestly, I don't like them very much. I like to handle my coins, touch them, stare at them, let my wife look at them etc., and if you're like me, go with a more durable coin.

So you are saying, if I am understanding you correctly, the Maple gold coins are "soft" because of their fineness and dont hold up?

Gold Maples are four 9 coins and as such, have that vibrant, bright, classic pure gold color, but if you drop it and it hits, say, the edge of a table, it will ding. They shine, big time. I haven't seen any discolor personally. AGEs are 22K and most definitely show a slight copper induced coloration that's different than a four 9 coin. They are still impressive and also much tougher. I have seen a few with spotting and the location determines how much visual impact it has.

Now let me throw another possibility into the mix: Mexican 50 Pesos Gold. It's a truly stunning coin in AU/UNC, massive at 1.2 troy ounces AU and carries about the lowest premium to spot of any bullion coin (and it shows 37.5g on the coin). It is 90% gold, so the condition range is pretty much the same as US pre-1933 gold. If you can inspect before buying, you can come away with an impressive coin. I've had good luck with Provident sight unseen.

Enjoy the search.
