I may just be imagining this, but does the "S" look upside down? Did they hand punch the Proofs?

Wildhare, just looked at mine, almost the same but looks like yours has MD? No RPMS for 90's proof. Mine looks a bit odd too because the upper area inside the curve is larger than the lower, so's yours. Optical illusion since we're used to seeing S's just the opposite. Error? is kinda, weird...my kind of coin!

The only 1990-present proof cent I have is a '99 and the MM looks normal in it (larger loop on bottom) but, it's obviously a different die so that doesn't help.

The punching question is interesting. I know business strikes started with the MM as a design element in 1990 but I believe proofs are minted on a different schedule. Were the 1990 proof MMs hand-punched?

They stopped hand punching the proof dies in 1985.

Thanks Conder101.....You are correct. I dug a bit last night and found this on Wexler's.

"By the middle of the 1980's the Mint started placing the last two digits of the date on the master design (galvano).  New master hubs were prepared each year for each denomination.  At this time the Mint also started placing the mint mark on the master design for all Commemorative and proof coins.

In 1990 and 1991 the Mint began applying the mint mark to the master die for circulation strike coins.  After 1994 the mint mark was placed on the master design."

There was a lot more information there, but the above information was the crux of it for my question.

However, if you turn that coin upside down, it looks OK.

Hmm. Maybe it is just the lighting or the angle...or maybe I'm just seeing things, but your MM appears fatter than the one on my 1990-S proof. Could this be what is making it look upside down?
