As part of a bulk buy I recently came into possession of the following coin:

South-Africa-Threepence---Mis-Strike/Damage?

South-Africa-Threepence---Mis-Strike/Damage?

It's the first potential error/mis-strike coin I've owned, and I just wanted to check what more experienced coin collectors thought of it. I've leant towards mis-strike rather than damage as there is an imprint in the top part of the reverse that I would have thought would not have been there with a damaged coin.

So, minting error? Worth doing anything with other than placing with some of my other South African 3ds as a curio piece?

(Was so excited by the reverse that I only just saw the die crack on the obverse by the 'Z' too)

This looks like an authentic lamination error, though someone probably "helped" break it off fully. It would have been better if the missing part was saved or still attached. It's cool that you can see how the reverse design got transferred down into the depth of the coin. This type of error is an interesting curio but doesn't have much collector value.

Thanks for the feedback :) From the wear on the coin it was clearly in circulation for a bit, so I guess it would have had plenty of chances for extra bits to fall off! As you say, an interesting curio - I'm certainly happy with it, I'm a big fan of silver threepences so it's nice to find one a bit different :)
