I believe it is a Grease Filled Die, common.

I agree, if it were worn then would most likely see it on the 3 as well.

They had to polish the 1943 dies much morev than others because steel stamping steel instead of copper wore them out quicker. This filling is caused by residue filling in the indented spaces as well as the surface of the die being worn down.

With the top of the S also showing some fill it's more likely a Grease Fill.

Your 56 is PSD. It looks like it was in a bezel for jewelry.
