I am looking to see if anyone can point me in a direction that could help me study about proof versus business strike die diagnostics.

I recently had the opportunity to purchase an MS67 red example of the 1970s small date, in a PCGS holder, of which pop is only 14, none higher.

The coin is beautiful. However, the coin looks like it is definitely a proof coin, not uncirculated. It actually looks DMPL, even on this copper rainbow colored cent. This coin is the same coin PCGS has as it's web image online for a 1970s small date MS67RD, and also in the PCGS coin facts app.

I was seriously considering sending the coin back to PCGS for a possible PL designation, but then had second thoughts. My fear is that if they made a mistake, PCGS would change the holder to reflect a PR coin.

My first concern would be to get the pop changed to reflect the error, and secondly it would greatly decrease the value of the coin, and then the issue of the web and phone images out there they used...

Does anyone know of any resource online? Any thoughts? Comments? Ideas?

Thank you!

You could look for known die markers on the business strikes.

Here is one of Ken Potter's pages where he compares business strikes to Proof strikes: http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/...tCompare.htm

You could compare the location of the mint mark on known Proofs and known business strikes to narrow it down a bit.
If you have a program like Photo Shop, you could use that to do some overlays of your coin verses others.

Pictures are always nice. Can you post some images of the coin in question?
