Here is a worn 54 DF note. Is it common to see this type of discoloration to blue as the reverse here shows?

Good guess, certainly a chemical reaction of some sort.

The washing machine scenario is possible but it would likely effect both sides I would think.

A spay bottle to apply just enough chemical to one side can achieve this.... (don't ask)

Is this a chemical reaction that actually changes the color or is the printing process somehow layered?
