Is there any way I can get the CUC without going to Cuba? And I do realize that it's illegal to take it out of the country.

Nobody checked when I left the country. If you know someone going there, I think you could safely ask them to bring some back.

Yea you can get them occasionally from travelers or immigrants. I have a bunch of the CUC coins that I've gotten from bulk world lots I've purchased, since ebay has banned them from sale on their website I've just been hording them recently. The banknotes seem to be harder to find then the coins are.

NumisRob,

Do you have the coins or the banknote? It's the banknote that I'm after.

I don't know if I'm allowed to ask if you will sell any since I'm new or if this is the right section of the forum. I don't want to get kicked off.

Hi farmerjohn - I just saved some for my own collection - I don't have any duplicates. I believe that you need 50 posts before you can start trading.

Rob,

So did you literally just bring them out in your wallet?

Do you think they might be more strict on Americans?

Yes - I brought them out in my wallet, together with some local Cuban pesos, and quite a few coins. I don't think anyone was that worried: I seem to remember passport control and customs being very smooth and easy. Mind you, during my stay in Cuba I went on a train ride and one of the station masters showed me a big brass manufacturer's plate from an old locomotive. He said I could buy it for $20. I was tempted - but a hunk of metal that size would definitely have shown up when my suitcase was X-rayed, and I don't think the Cubans would have taken kindly to someone smuggling out their national heritage! So I left it behind at Hershey train depot!

farmerjohn - I've noticed that this year NCL cruises (Norwegian Cruise Lines) have started arranging cruises out of the USA that call in Havana. Their passengers are primarily American. I somehow can't imagine the Customs and Immigration staff going through the wallets of every person on a 3,000-passenger cruise ship!
