A list of frank questions about PCGS, NGC, & ANACS.

1. Why people seem to use PCGS the most. Is this true.
2. Many of the recent graded counterfeit coins that I saw were in NCG holder. Is this generally true? or just coincidence on my part.
3. My favorite, ANACS, can they survive to compete successfully with other two companies.
4. Any other TPGS company that you recommend and why?

I only recently came back to collecting so I want to hear from members here.

Thanks for commenting.

ANACS has secured a niche market around Peace and Morgan VAMs, they will grade any and all VAMs while NGC and PCGS will only grade the most popular ones. PCGS does have a bigger market share it seems over PCGS, but NGC seems to be gaining on them as of late. PCGS graded coins still do bring higher premiums, especially for top graded coins. The only other American TPG of any repute is ICG, but I have never personally subitted anything to them while I have to the other three.

PCGS is owned by a publically traded corporation - http://www.collectorsuniverse.com/
NGC is owned by Certified Collectables Group, LLC - http://www.collectiblesgroup.com/
ANACS is owned by an LLC - nobody seems to know who owns them
ICG is a PO box in Tampa Florida - (seriously, the Florida business registration has lapsed)

1. A PCGS-graded coin supposedly sells for a better price than any of the other TPG's.
This is probably marginally true when compared to NGC.
ANACS is trying to climb up to that level but that will take a LONG time.

2. NCG (if it exists) has no market standing.
NGC is the respected one.

3. See answer to 1.
They have definitely tightened up their grading standards but have a LONG way to go to become a major competitor.

4. Essentially "no" with respect to US coins.

I see three reasons for having a coin slabbed.
In my preferred order (most to least important):
1. Authentication: Is the coin a REAL Government issue (and I'm only interested in US coins)
2. Originality: Has the coin been altered in any fashion.
3. Grade

A large number of my Errors (many Foreign) reside in SEGS & ANACS holders from over 15 years ago when Certification Fees were between $6.00 to $8.00 a coin..

Back then a decent double struck Cent, Nickel or Dime would average $25.00 each on ebay, and only logical that paying almost double the cost to have it certified by PCGS or NGC was not a option..

I only used NGC one time, when submitting at a reduced rate (coupon) after joining PMG for my Currency Errors, and that didn't end well.

For reasons unknown to me, NGC refused to list the Die Variety on the Holder, even though I paid the additional Variety Fee, thus turning my $500 Variety into a $35.00 coin w/o the listed Variety.. Lucky for me PCI had just offered their Signature Series Slabs, and submitted my NGC coin for cross-over into a PCI - J.T. Stanton Signature Series Slab after Mr. Stanton confirmed the Die Variety listed in The CherryPickers Guide..

I believe I'm the only one to cross over from NGC to PCI, and curious how many Die Varieties have gone unlisted in what many believe are the Top Two Certification Services..

There is a way they can survive, but it won't be directly competing head to head. They're good for lower value stuff, Carr stuff, ancients, and varieties that the PCGS or NGC won't do. They won't ever get the high end market that PCGS has though.

PCGS just had record submissions numbers, seems to be the other way around.
