It is basically worth face value, someone ruined it with the gold plating

I'm not sure why you're calling it a no S. This appears to be the 1976 Type 2 Ike dollar minted in Philadelphia that year. Philly coins didn't get a mint mark until 1979 ( SBA dollar) or 1980 (everything else but cent) depending on what denomination you're looking at.

Is there anything that leads you to believe that there should be an S mint mark, but it's missing? That seems to be what the title is suggesting, but I'm not sure.

No insult intended! I just wanted some clarification. I do know that there exists some no S proof coins which are valuable, and it seems that you know that too. I just didn't want you to think that this is a no S proof coin. Sometimes in the variety section, we'll point out seller listings of "no S" coins which must be due to seller ignorance or intent to deceive. I'm not saying either was your motivation, I just thought I'd try to pass on some information.

No need to apologize. No one is born knowing this stuff, so we are here to help.

It might only be worth a dollar, but for me it would still be a fun find.
