Might have lucked out with this one. ebay pics were a bit blurry, but was a good risk for $18. In hand it looks like an 1847/7, not sure which variety though. Any comments much appreciated. Ed

Tend to agree, but not my specialty. Can't lose at that price!

There are three different 7/small 7 varieties N-2, 18, and 31. N-2 and 31 share the same obv die. This appears from the images to be N-18, if so you got a good one. The one usually seen, N-2 is common (R-3), the N-31 is very rare an R-6. The N-18 is rare, R-5. (Rarities are from the 2nd edition of Grellman, they are probably a little lower now, but a N-18 is still probably a desirable variety.)

Have had some time to look at it better, and it might not be an N-18, because the tip of the hair curl on the coin is over the inside curve of the 8. On the N-18 it's midway inner and outer curve of the 8. I don't see the repunch under the peak of the 1 or the defect under the 13th star near the rim, so that might eliminate an N-2. Imo it's an N-31.

I tended to shy away from the N-2/31 obv because it doesn't seem to have the die line through the R of LIBERTY but does seem to have the lines below the T that N-18 has. I also don't see the lump by star 13 that comes on the N-2/31 obv, although that would tend to suggest 31 which doesn't have the lump. The position of the left edge of the base of the 1 over the denticals doesn't seem to match either one.
