I put together a list of "places" that have issued coins, banknotes, and stamps. I posted this list back in December, but I've updated it considerably since then. I use the most generous definition of "place" I could. The list is close to 2500 long and definitely could be expanded if I finished my exploration of ancient places. Notice that my purpose in making this list was to provide myself and others with some of the history of these "places" we refer to. They were not just abstract "places" to the people that lived there and we owe it to them to know something about where "their" (our?) coins came from. http://department.txwes.edu/jbrown0...OFEC_003.xlsEdited by Jays-Dad 04/21/2008 06:44 am

You seem to have included rather a lot. I myself have 307 different "places" by my own count, but I suppose I would score somewhat higher on yours since you have four entries for my native Norway and I have only one. It never occurred to me to list as separate the periods together with Sweden and Denmark, but I can see the case for doing so. The case for including "Norway under Germany", however, I do not see. This was not an internationally accepted occurrence, and the mint in Kongsberg stood for coin production, same as usual.
EDIT - since we are talking about Norway I should also add that the period together with Denmark started in 1387. Any coins before 1387, and there exist some, if not many, must be considered as independent Norway - same category as 1905 to present.

Thanks yourself Jays-Dad, I really appreciate your list, lots of interesting information there for me to take advantage of.
I cross-checked part of your list with my own much shorter one and came up with an interesting observation - you have not included the French States from the 16th century given in Krause bar one. You have Aire, but not (French) Alsace, Boisbelle & Henrichemont, Bouillon & Sedan, Burgundy, Chateau-Renaud, Dombes, Nevers & Rethel, Orange and Verdun. Are these purposefully left out?

I do not have access to a 1600-1700 Krause or they definitely would be included. I suspect quite a bit more could be included with access to the right references.

I see. In that case I can update it for you. I'll use your list as a starting point and include anything I find missing. It seems a worthwile project, especially as I have never taken the time to investigate this magnificent book as closely as it deserves. I too seldom come over interesting 16th century coins. If you have a little patience with me I will present an upgraded list shortly.

Though I'd rather own the 1600-1700 Krause myself, I'll be happy to see these updates. Can't wait!!

Jats-Dad - I managed to add 260 places. I also introduced a new column called "added" so show my contribution, in case you feel like checking information you will know who put it there.
Now I only need to find out how you upload files. It was not as easy as I had imagined. I think I will just email it to you

Thanks to Litote for the update. Looks good. The link in the original post has been updated to reflect these changes. I merged our sheets and removed the "added" column. However, I've added a comments column. I kept meaning to as I was building the original spreadsheet, but never did. The only comment I added so far was for Netherlands West Indies where the comment reads "former name for Netherlands Antilles". I would love the sheet to reflect some of these types of info and name changes, but I've been so busy for so long, it won't happen for a long time.
