I have a 1951 S Wheat penny. I found today coin roll hunting.
I don't know exactly what this error would be called. It's on the 9 on the date and also the E in liberty. Does anyone happen to know what this is called?

Is this considered a double die?

broken die I would think, I don't know if it is just the lighting, but I think I see a die clash on the obverse
Rest in Peace

Hi Lelah, those are called die chips. Pieces have broken off around the device edges on the die, making those. Kinda neat to find on the outside of the devics, most often it fills in the 9 or the R or B in Liberty. Nice find!

Great find!

That is called a Die Break I believe.
Could it be IDB-1c-1951S-01? Kind of looks like it.

Edited to clarify that the mark on the "9" in the date is the Die Break. The mark on the "E" in Liberty looks to be a Die Chip.

I think you nailed it Mont. It does look like the IDB-1c-1951S-01.

Excellent find!

Edit: die chips and die breaks are essentially part of the same process. There is a line in size crossed (I read 4 square millimeters) at which a chip becomes a break. I hope this is correct and helps.

IDB-1c-1951S-01 Really nice. I have never found one like that before.

Good pickup on that IDB Mont I didn't even think of it being an IDB.

I see it too. I think we are seeing "Lincoln's Ghost", I think it is common on wheats.

I don't think it's a die clash -- I think it's progressive indirect design transfer.

Lelah, it's definitely worth saving. It's "value" would depend on whether you find prospective customers who collect this particular type of error. That's the case with most error or variety coins.
